Verdant Capital advises Greenbelt Fertilisers on its sale to global fertiliser major, Yara International for USD 51 M

Yara has acquired Greenbelt Fertilisers as part of the ongoing expansion of its downstream footprint in Africa and globally. The transaction illustrates the continued appetite on the part of global fertiliser majors to expand in Africa in both the upstream and downstream businesses.
Verdant Capital’s client, Greenbelt Fertilsers is a leading fertiliser blending and distribution businesses in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique with annual sales in excess of 80,000 tonnes. The sale for a value of USD 51 million is one of the largest M&A transactions for a fertiliser business in Africa in recent times. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016 following competition authority approval.
Verdant Capital has completed four cross-boarder transactions in 2015.

In recognition of the strength of its cross border franchise, Verdant Capital was awarded the accolade of Best Corporate Finance Firm in South Africa, 2015 by Acquisition International.

Following its transaction in agri-chemicals in South Africa last quarter, the sale of Greenbelt Fertilisers is Verdant Capital’s second transaction in the agri / fertilisers sector this year alone. Over the last two years Verdant Capital is perhaps the most active firm in Africa in this sector.
