Specialist Funds

Verdant Capital’s Specialist Funds segment is responsible for the management of the Verdant Capital Hybrid Fund, a USD 80 million fund to invest hybrid capital into inclusive financial institutions. The is anchored by two leading European development finance institutions. The segment is also responsible for managing the firm’s lending facilities to financial institutions for on-lending as invoice discounting (factoring) and supply chain financing (reverse financing).

Verdant Capital has an exceptional track record across the Continent, having raised over USD 250 million in private debt and equity for inclusive financial institutions and “fintech” companies since 2017.

Restructuring

Verdant Capital has extensive experience offering debt restructuring advisory services, including: debt renegotiations, distressed refinancing and distressed M&A. Verdant Capital’s services include both advising shareholders and debtor companies, as well as creditor groups.

Verdant Capital wins Local Financial Advisor of the Decade in 2022 by PEA (Private Equity Africa)

Established in 2013, Verdant Capital levers extensive investment experience and deep relationships to fuel pan-African fintech development. It stays in close contact with investors and entrepreneurs via offices in Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, the Congo and Germany. Verdant Capital handled the second-largest deal in Nigeria’s electronic payments sector in 2021: the sale of Baxi, one of the country’s largest digital payment networks, to MFS Africa, which simplifies cross-border payments through an integrated hub.

Verdant Capital was ranked No 4 by deal flow in 2022 in the prestigious DealMakers Africa M&A leagues tables, for the pan-Africa (ex-South Africa) region overall. DealMakers is the pre-eminent league table agency for Africa.

In the East Africa region league table (Corporate Finance deal flow), Verdant Capital finished first in 2022. This follows the firm’s joint-first-place ranking in 2021.

Verdant Capital completed M&A and private capital transactions in each East, West and Southern Africa. Verdant Capital’s landmark transactions in completed in 2022 included: the follow-on equity raise for WIOCC, the pan-African data centre and digital infrastructure player, taking the total capital raise to USD 124 million; the sale of leading Nigerian fintech, Baxibox to MFS Africa; and the Series A extension for leading remittance-to-wallet and mobile money business, Zeepay. In South Africa, Verdant Capital advised on the successful acquisition of a stake in leading battery maker Freedom Won. Overall, in recognition to the firm’s successes advising private equity firms on exits and facilitating new investments, Verdant Capital was awarded the title of best local financial advisor in the prestigious Private Equity Africa awards in 2022 for the second consecutive year.

In 2022 Verdant Capital also completed its first investment from the Verdant Capital Hybrid Fund, into Watu Credit Uganda.
